How to make a prayer journal

Do you want to make a prayer journal and you have got little to no idea on how to go about it? Having a prayer journal by your side is not only convenient but can also act as a reference if you have forgotten to pray over some particular issue, or need advice from a particular situation.”

What is a prayer journal?

This is a devotion booklet that acts as a guide on how to spend time in prayer. It keeps record of your prayer requests. It is usually divided into different sections, each aimed at recognising the goodness of God at work everyday. Some sections also serve as guides on how to pray for other people or when to pray for fellow Christians.

A prayer journal has several benefits:

– Helps you grow in your faith.

– Establishes a relationship with Jesus.

– The Journal is easy to carry wherever you go and read while waiting, or, even better during the time of prayer.

How to make a prayer journal

Making a prayer journal is one of the best things you can do to improve your prayer life. Here is a step by step guide on how to make a prayer journal:

1. Select a notebook

Pick a notebook that is small enough to carry around easily but big enough to fit your entries comfortably.

– Get a blank notebook and write ‘Prayer Journal’ in bold letters at the top of the page.

– Make an index at the back of the journal where you can list all the people you have prayed for, all those who have prayed for you and other important information like dates, etc.

2. Start writing down your prayers in this notebook:

Write down all your requests starting with ‘Lord, please’ and ending with ‘Amen’ (a sign of affirmation).

3. You may also draw pictures or write notes as an accompaniment to your prayers

These will be helpful reminders of how God has answered your prayers in the past, or how He wants to answer them in the future.

4. Be sure to write down all the details of your prayer

when you prayed, what you prayed for, how long you spent in prayer and any other significant details.

If you have a prayer partner or a group that prays together, make sure you write down the date that this happened and who was involved.

5. Take your prayer journal with you everywhere:

-Carry it with you at all times so that whenever an opportunity for prayer arises, you have something to write on.

The idea is not to use your journal as an excuse not to pray but as a tool to help you be more purposeful about your prayers.

If there are people in need of prayer or if there are situations that require urgent prayers, jot it down in your journal so that come next morning when you wake up and start praying again, they will come back into your mind and be fresh on your heart and mind again.

If you are a person who struggles with distractions, carry it with you to work or when you go out. This will help you to be more focused and intentional about your prayers.

6. Start by praying for people around you

Write down the names of people that God lays on your heart – family members, friends, colleagues, neighbours etc.

Pray for them specifically, ask God what He wants to do in their lives and what He wants to change.

As you pray for them, write down specific things that God is doing in their lives (if anything).

Continue praying for these people – this time write down any significant changes that occur over the following days or weeks (if any).

7. Pray for your country / city / neighbourhood:

(You can pray specifically for a particular area if there is something specific going on there).  Write down how the city/neighbourhood/country is doing.

Write down any current issues / problems that you see in that area.  Ask God what He wants to do in that city, neighbourhood or country.  Ask Him how He wants to change these things and how He wants to use you to be a part of His kingdom-work there.

8. Pray for the people of your workplace:

Write down the names of people that God lays on your heart – family members, friends, colleagues etc.

Pray for them specifically, ask God what He wants to do in their lives and what He wants to change.

As you pray for them, write down any specific things that God is doing in their lives (if anything).

9 . Pray for the leaders in your country

(You can pray specifically for a particular leader if there is something specific going on with him/her).   Write down how they are doing
