Why Headphones with Flat Frequency Response

I’ve been a headphone enthusiast for years. I used to be very picky about my cans and was always looking for the latest and greatest. But, as I learned more about headphones, I realized that there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Nowadays, my philosophy is to only purchase headphones with flat frequency response and over-ear design unless there is some reason not to.

Noise isolation: Passive attenuation of ambient noise by the headset. The better the noise isolation, the less you will hear outside of your music/games/movies.

Noise-canceling: Active cancellation of ambient noise by the headset. This type of noise reduction can be achieved via active electronics or physical means (e.g., silicone ear pads).

Cable length: Length of the cable between the headset and the connector on either end. A longer cable may allow you to use your device while not being tethered to it near your body.

Noise isolation is the attenuation of ambient noise by the headset. This type of attenuation can be achieved by passive means or active means. The better the noise isolation, the less you will hear outside of your music, games, or movies.

 

Noise Cancelling – Active Cancellation of Ambient Noise by the Headset

Noise-canceling is achieved with active electronics in the ear cups or with physical means, like silicone ear pads.

Noise isolating can be passive or active. Passive attenuation is achieved by designing the ear cups to fit snug against your ears to block out noise from entering your ears. Active attenuation takes it a step further by employing electronics to reduce noise around you.

Active noise cancellation headphones are more expensive but can provide better performance in certain situations.

 

Cable Length

A longer cable is a great thing for a lot of reasons. For one, it means you get more freedom of movement while wearing your headphones. You don’t have to walk around with your device close to you at all times, which is good if the battery on your device isn’t great. It also means that you’ll have more range from the source of your music or movies.

Some people may not like a long cable because they feel it gets tangled up easier and it can cause a little extra weight on the wire. However, I think these are nominal concerns in terms of overall quality and longevity of the product, especially when you consider some wireless headphones start to cut out after about 30 feet away from their source—not an ideal distance if you’re trying to watch a movie with your spouse on the other side of the room!

Sound isolation

Cable Length: The longer the cable, the more freedom you will have with your device. If you are looking for a headset that allows you to be mobile without worrying about being tethered to your device near your body, then this is an important factor to consider. However, if you are looking for a wired headset that will allow you to use your phone while charging it at the same time, then this is not as important.

Frequency Response: This refers to the sound quality of the headphones. Headphones with a flat frequency response generally have better sound quality than those with boosted bass or treble.

Sound Isolation: This refers to how much outside noise gets in when using your headphones. Generally speaking, the better the sound isolation, the less outside noise gets into your music or movie experience. Make sure that if you are buying headphones primarily for noise isolation purposes, then over-ear designs are best suited for this purpose since they will completely cover your ear externally and block out any ambient noise from entering.

 

Conclusion

Noise isolation and noise-canceling are two different types of features that can be found on over-ear headphones. Noise isolation refers to the passive attenuation of ambient noise by the headset. Noise-canceling, on the other hand, refers to the active cancellation of ambient noise by the headset.

The most important factors in making a decision on which type of headphones you want to buy are your preference for sound and your budget. It’s important to note that both types of headphones will reduce the amount of outside noise, but only noise-canceling headphones will actively cancel it.
